Wilfred Benitez, age 17, wins a 15-round decision over Antonio Cervantes to win the world junior welterweight title. Benitez was the youngest boxer to win a professional title fight since Joe Louis knocked out 6-year-old Petey "Soft Neck" McGee just seven seconds into the first round of a 1943 bout, breaking the child's neck.

New York Yankees pitchers Mike Kekich and Fritz Peterson tell reporters that they traded wives during the offseason. Peterson also picked up a daughter to be nailed later in the deal.

Nearly 200 runners begin a cross-country race from Los Angeles to New York. The escaped runners were quickly rounded up by sheriff's deputies and returned to prison.

The first recorded indoor hockey game is played at Victoria Skating Rink in Montreal. The game was marred when several women and children who were also on the ice for that evening's free skate had to be taken off with concussions, lacerations and broken bones.

The NBA holds its first NBA All-Star Game as the West defeats the East, 111-94. The game was preceded by the league's first-ever Sensible, Conservative and Respectable Lay-Up Contest, a staple at All-Star Games in the 1950s.

Former owner Bill Veeck is elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. In honor of Veeck and in hopes of creating a buzz around his induction, his introduction speech was given in Vulcan by a handicapped midget dressed as a clown.

Cassius Clay, a 7-to-1 underdog, stops champion Sonny Liston in the seventh round to win the world heavyweight title. Clay would later lose his title to Muhammad Ali.
