August 2, 1921 After just three hours of deliberation by the jury, eight White Sox players are acquitted of throwing the 1919 World Series. The surprise decision was attributed to the defense stocking the jury with drunk Cubs fans.
August 3, 1987 Twins starts Joe Niekro is ejected after being caught with a file on the mound. The file contained scouting reports on the opponent’s lineup.
August 4, 1936 American sprinter Helen Stephens wins the 100m at the Berlin Olympics and, according to reports, Adolf Hitler makes a pass at her after the race, but she rebuffs his advances. Stephens said she felt Hitler’s mustache was too small to give a good mustache ride.
August 5, 1968 Longtime major league first baseman John Olerud is born in Seattle. Olerud’s delivery was complicated by his in-utero helmet.
August 6, 1890 Cleveland rookie Cy Young defeats Chicago, 6-1, for the first of his 511 major league wins. The victory was a dream come true for Young’s parents, who named him after the pitching award in hopes he would become a big league pitcher.
August 7, 1932 Babe Didrikson is denied the Olympic gold medal in the women’s high jump when it is ruled that her jumping style is illegal. Didrikson used her penis to jump the bar as though it was the pole vault.
August 8, 1976 The Chicago White Sox make major league history by wearing baseball shorts in a game against the Kansas City Royals. The baseball shorts were so popular that they were immediately adopted as part of the official uniform of the Overweight Gym Teachers Association of America.
