Actual events in history that occurred this week – with a back-story you may not have known...

July 12, 1931 – A major league record for doubles is set as the St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs belts 23 in a single game. With most of the doubles being the ground-rule variety, after the game the Cardinals decided to do away with the one-foot-high outfield fence at Sportsman’s Park.

July 13, 1930 – The first World Cup soccer tournament begins in Uruguay with 13 teams competing. The competition so united the world that the world was war-free for the rest of the century.

July 14, 1951 – Citation wins the Hollywood Gold Cup on CBS – the first sporting event broadcast in color. The broadcast allowed viewers nationwide to discover that jockeys are even creepier in color due to their orange, leprechaun-esque skin.

July 15, 1912 – Jim Thorpe wins the gold medal in the Olympic decathlon, accumulating nearly 800 points more than his closest competitor. Thorpe was greatly helped by scalping being part of the 1912 Olympic decathlon.

July 16, 1889 – Shoeless Joe Jackson is born in Brandon Mills, South Carolina. His testicles not yet descended at birth, Jackson was called Ballsless Joe Jackson until he was nearly four years old.

July 17, 1994 – Brazil wins a record fourth World Cup by defeating Italy on penalty kicks. The Brazilians credited their stellar play to unmatched quickness and agility made possible by their bald, silky smooth crotches.

July 18, 1987 – Don Mattingly of the New York Yankees ties a major league record by homering in his eighth consecutive game. To commemorate the feat, Mattingly’s bat, jersey and mullet were immediately sent to the Baseball Hall of Fame.
