Ponder This...

Did anyone else sense a bit of hypocrisy last week when ‘Sports Illustrated’ breathlessly reported the Katie Hnida-Colorado rape allegations … less than a week after its swimsuit edition hit the stands. And not only that, but it was Rick Reilly who broke the story in his column, right on the heels of a piece in which he excitedly reported on the three days he spent ogling and applying body paint to nude swimsuit models.  Not that the SI swimsuit edition promotes rape. I’m not saying that at all. But it’s hard to swallow the contrived outraged of a publication that for 40 years has targeted young, athletic males with an issue whose only purpose is to – and let’s be honest here – objectify women.

Yes, what’s happening at Colorado is unfortunate. But anybody who has been to college in the past 15 years knows that the problems in Boulder are no worse than they are everywhere else. It just blew up there first.

I’m sure that any doubts NFL teams had about Maurice Clarett’s maturity were put to rest when he didn’t take part in the combine because his mommy thought it was a bad idea for him to be there.

The best reaction to Clarett’s no-show had to be from Bills’ GM Tom Donahoe who called it “a farce.” This coming from a guy who knows farces, having bought into Drew Rosenhaus’s sell job of Willis McGahee around this time a year ago.

In my opinion, Lawrence Frank may be the greatest thing to happen to the state of New Jersey since … uh …

In my opinion, Lawrence Frank is the greatest to ever happen to the state of New Jersey. Sadly enough.

The Timberwolves outstanding play has presented a quandary: do you root for them on behalf of Kevin Garnett? … or against them so Latrell Sprewell never gets his hands on a championship trophy? Here’s hoping Sprewell is unable to participate in the playoffs due to an attack by a roving gang of stranglers.

I’m still not sure if the NCAA’s banning of St. Bonaventure last week from the NCAA and NIT Tournaments was a legitimate punishment, or just a way to rub the school’s face in its suckiness.

Former Braves outfielder Otis Nixon was arrested on Friday for fondling a woman. Not to excuse Nixon’s behavior, but if you remember what Nixon looks like – think E.T. with AIDS – fondling is probably the only way he could ever touch a woman.

Prediction: the outrage that came from Janet Jackson’s Super Bowl halftime show will pale in comparison to the fury you’ll see this Sunday after the horse that played Seabiscuit takes a crap on the Academy Awards red carpet.

Just wondering … did Ray Lewis ever speak with the families of those who were killed during Super Bowl 2000 like he promised he would?
