Angry Jake Plummer Threatens to Mentor Jay Cutler
The demotion of Denver Broncos quarterback Jake Plummer added an ugly chapter today as the former starter threatened to serve as a mentor to new first string quarterback Jay Cutler.
“Coach Shanahan may not want me to be the starter anymore, but that doesn’t mean I can no longer have an impact on this team,” said Plummer. “Far from it. I plan to be in Jay Cutler’s ear all the time, molding and guiding him each step of the way.”
Denver head coach Mike Shanahan says he is disappointed by Plummer’s statements.
“I understand Jake is upset about losing his job, but I was hoping he would handle this in a mature way and just step aside. But, unfortunately, he has responded by issuing these crazy threats,” says Shanahan. “Apparently he is intent on taking the whole team down with him no matter what.
Shanahan says he has a meeting scheduled with his former starter for tomorrow morning in hopes of coming to a resolution, but by then it may be too late as Plummer has already had several days of access to the young, impressionable rookie.
“I knew right after our loss to the Chiefs last Thursday that I was getting benched,” said Plummer, “and I began mentoring Jay right away on the flight home to Denver. So I’ve almost had him for a week now. At this point there’s very little Coach Shanahan can do to save his prized new guy.”
Cutler, apparently completely oblivious to Plummer’s devious agenda, says the veteran signal quarterback has been a huge help to him in recent days.
“Jake has taught me a lot about what is required to be an NFL quarterback,” said Cutler. “For instance, he said that when I rollout I should always then throw across my body to the other side of the field because defenses never expect that. And he said that I should always lock onto one receiver before I even snap the ball so I can see exactly where that receiver is going to go. And then, when I throw the ball, it should be either very, very high or almost uncatchably low so it’s tough for opposing defensive backs to pick it off. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg, he says. So it’s been great, because in college I was taught to do the exact opposite of all that stuff. But Jake is helping me out even though he lost his job to me. I think that shows he’s a really good guy.”
