Roger Clemens to Return to Astros Rotation After Four-Day Retirement

Pitching legend Roger Clemens, now 43-years-old, will reportedly come out of a four-day retirement on Sunday and pitch against the Texas Rangers. He hasn’t pitched since Tuesday night against the Detroit Tigers.

“Roger hasn’t pitched for us since all the way back on Tuesday, but we’ll be glad to have him back and are confident his taking the mound will be a huge boost to our team,” said Astros manager Phil Garner. “You know, it’s amazing to think it’s been four whole days since he’s retired. I honestly thought he was gone for good this time.”

Clemens reportedly will spend the time from his last start Tuesday night until his Sunday return with his family, enjoying his time away from the game and pondering his future.

“It took me a little while to come to a decision, but I feel good about coming back on Sunday,” said Clemens, after his start last night. “My wife and kids are in full support of my decision.”

The future Hall of Famer admitted that he considered returning with the Yankees, Red Sox or Rangers, but ultimately wanted to give it another go with the Astros.

“They’re struggling a little bit lately, but I’m hopeful I can help them get it in gear,” said Clemens. “However, if they don’t start winning I’m probably going to retire again after my next start and then make a return with a better team like New York or Boston.”

Clemens signed a one-year, $22 million contract – prorated over part of the season – with Houston when he came out of another retirement a few weeks ago. But he says his new contract must be worth at least $50 million if he is to pitch on Sunday.

“I feel like he’s maybe screwing us over a bit,” said Astros owner Drayton McClane, “since he is technically already under contract with us. But what are we supposed to do – not pay Roger Clemens? Our fan base wouldn’t accept it. So we’ll bite the bullet and give him the money he wants. I just hope he doesn’t retire again after Sunday’s start and demand even more before his next turn in the rotation comes up.”
