ESPN to Release Unedited Version of its “Sex and Sports” Report

ESPN will release an unedited director’s cut of its five-part report on sex and sports that aired last week on ‘SportsCenter.’ The 90-minute DVD will have never-before-seen clips of naked athletes, sexual encounters between players and fans, and footage from hidden locker room cameras.

“The ‘Sex and Sports’ DVD is going to be hot, hot, hot,” said Mychal Laubeshaw, who produced the hard-hitting series. “If you think the ‘Girls Gone Wild’ tapes are something, wait until you see this.”

The investigative report takes a look at how sports and sex are intertwined, touching on issues ranging from strip clubs, groupies and the R-rated Super Bowl halftime show to recruiting parties, the ‘Sports Illustrated’ swimsuit edition and the pressure placed on female athletes to wear revealing attire. The DVD, set to hit stores Friday, includes all five installments of the series as well as 60 minutes of behind-the-scenes coverage of athletes in the nude.

“I can guarantee that you won’t be able to take your eyes off the screen,” said Laubeshaw. “Once you fast-forward through the news stuff, you’re going to get to see nude shots of Anna Kournikova, Janet Jackson and Serena Williams, as well as groupies having sex with Marcellus Wiley and strippers giving Baron Davis a lap dance. We even got Christine Brennan, that chick columnist for ‘USA Today’ who’s really big into women’s sports, to show her boobs. This is the best sports DVD ever.”

But critics say the network is trying to have it both ways – condemning how sex has tainted sports, while capitalizing on the marriage between the two at the same time.

“ESPN trades in sex just like everyone else,” said Brennan of ‘USA Today.’ “So I can’t fully stomach them expressing outrage over things like the swimsuit edition or the sex recruiting parties at Colorado. And I am also now wishing I hadn’t shown my breasts to that reporter. I didn’t realize they were going to use it on the DVD. Although it was somewhat liberating and will probably help my career.”

Despite the criticism, ESPN is looking for the “Sex and Sports” DVD to be a big-seller. “We are just giving the public what it wants,” said Laubeshaw. “ESPN is a source of both news and entertainment, and this DVD provides both, let me tell you that.”
