Sept. 11th Families Offended After Player Shoots 9-11 from the Field

Some relatives of those lost on 9/11 have expressed outrage after a player for Texas State shot 9-for-11 from the free throw line in a win against Chattanooga on Saturday.

“I am shocked and angered that someone would have the audacity to shoot 9 of 11,” said Mike Robinson, who lost his son in the terrorist attacks in 2001. “He very easily could have shot 8 of 11 or 10-for-11, but he chose to go 9-for-11 for his own personal gain. It truly makes me sick and tarnishes the memory of those who were lost that horrible day.”

Marvin scored the majority of his game-high 16 points from the line, hitting two free throws with one second on the clock to give his team a one-point victory. “It wasn’t for my own personal gain. I wanted us to win. Had I missed them we would have lost,” said Marvin. “And I had no idea that I had made 9 of 11 from the line.”

Texas State was unaware that 9/11 families were upset over Marvin’s performance until several hours after the game when head coach Frank McCoo received a fax from a group representing victims’ families expressing outrage.

The furor over Marvin’s effort from the line comes on the heels of several incidents that offended 9/11 families. President Bush was denounced last week over campaign ads that refer to his record since September 11th, and MBNA pulled a MasterCard design which featured a photograph of firefighters at Ground Zero after receiving complaints, even though proceeds from the cards went to 9/11 charities.

“As thought it wasn’t bad enough with the Bush and MasterCard stuff,” said Maggie Overton, a 9/11 survivor, “then the sports world has to gang up on us with this guy shooting 9-for-11. It’s despicable.”

But Marvin refused to accept blame. “I’m sorry if I hurt anyone, but I’m not going to apologize,” he said. “I didn’t do anything on purpose and I just wanted to win the game. I think some of these people need to relax a little bit about all of this.”
