Man Cries Like Baby Over “One Shining Moment”

Ed Wolczyk, a 37-year old pipefitter from Philadelphia wept like a baby Monday night while watching CBS’s “One Shining Moment” during the NCAA men’s championship post-game show.

Maryland's "One Shining Moment" caused Ed Wolczyk to cry like a baby.
“That dang segment gets me every time,” Wolczyk said, tears welling-up in his eyes as he recalled his emotions Tuesday morning. “The music, the passion shown on those guys faces – it’s the human spirit at it’s core. I was very moved.”

“One Shining Moment” puts highlights from the NCAA Tournament to the vocals of Teddy Pendergrass. The montage, which has capped CBS’s tournament coverage for the past 16 years, dramatically chronicles the three-week showdown, from the opening tips to the cutting down of the championship nets.

Wolczyk says he and his buddies from Local 419 used to watch the championship game together every year, but that stopped a few years ago when he broke down in front of them during “One Shining Moment.” “I don’t know how those guys can keep their emotions in,” he says. “But they wouldn’t let me hear the end of it.”

Laura Wolczyk, Ed’s wife, said she doesn’t understand why her husband gets all choked-up over the song and the accompanying highlights. “All it is is some stupid basketball highlights and a sappy song, but he sits there and balls his eyes out,” she said. “It’s kind of pathetic and very immasculating.”
