Yankees general manager Brian Cashman reported ruefully today that there is no truth to reports that third baseman Alex Rodriguez will be dealt before Sunday’s trade deadline.
“God knows I’ve been trying everything I can think of to get rid of the guy,” Cashman said with a sigh, “but he’s virtually untradable. Too much baggage and too big of a contract.

Omar Minaya looking to plug Mets non-Latin holes before the trade deadline

New York Mets general manager Omar Minaya is feverishly working the phones as baseball’s trade deadline approaches, hoping to pull off a few deals that would give him the 100-percent Latino team he so desires.
“I’ve been here two years now and I’ve almost been able to plug every non-Latino hole we have,” said Minaya. “Hopefully by the time the trade deadline expires on Sunday, my goal will have been reached.”
Minaya says his biggest deals will likely be moves that send third baseman David Wright to the Yankees for Alex Rodriguez, and rookie outfielder Lastings Milledge to the Phillies for Bobby Abreu.
“Wright and Milledge are fine young players, there’s no doubt about that,” said Minaya. “But I’ve researched their family ancestry and there’s not even a hint of Latin blood there so they have to go. If not now, then before next season. And especially Wright. He’s Scotch-Irish. That’s about as far from Latino as a person can get.”

Garth Snow makes great first move as GM by replacing Garth Snow in Islanders’ net

New Islanders general manager Garth Snow got off to a great start in his new position last week by getting rid of Garth Snow as the team’s backup goaltender.
The move was applauded by many Islanders fans who felt the appointment of Snow to the front office by team owner Charles Wang was an awful move.
“I’ll give it to Snow,” said season ticket holder Mike Stewart. “If this is the type of moves we can expect from him in the future, then we’ve got ourselves a great general manager. Lord knows we were never going to win a title with Garth Snow in net, and he saw that and got rid off him. Awesome stuff. I’m feeling excited about the new regime.”
Snow says being named general manager was contingent upon him retiring from the ice, but that is not a fact he plans to share with the fans.
“I’m fine with them thinking this was of my doing,” said Snow. “But to be honest, even if I didn’t have to quit playing, I would have cut myself anyway. I know I sucked. Everyone did. Well, at least, everyone but the Islanders’ former management. I was just collecting a paycheck. But I won’t have players like me under my watch. You don’t win titles with players like Garth Snow on your team.”

Despite being just 27-years-old and coming off one of the best seasons of his career last year with the Indianapolis Colts, new Arizona Cardinals running back Edgerrin James can’t quite seem to shake the feeling that his career is about to take a precipitous downturn.

With his place in cycling history now set in stone thanks to a rousing victory in the Tour de France, American cyclist Floyd Landis is hoping his big win will be enough to fulfill a dream he had since he was a boy growing up on his parents’ Mennonite farm in rural Pennsylvania.

Duke hires new lacrosse coach with staunch anti-rape background

Duke named their new men’s lacrosse coach on Friday after an exhaustive search for a strong anti-rape candidate.
John Danowski, the former Hofstra coach, was offered the job by university president Richard Brodhead on Thursday.
“We asked John every which way whether he is okay with his players raping someone or if he is pro-rape in any way,” said Brodhead, in introducing the coach at a press conference, “and he didn’t break down even once. Not once. He admitted that he, personally, enjoys rough sex – yes, but that was it. So we’re pretty confident that the lawlessness that has defined our program in recent years is at an end.”
Danowski says he is looking forward to his first practice at the helm this fall.
“On the first day of practice I always ask my teams to make some goals for the season,” said Danowski. “Hopefully they’ll say that their No. 1 goal is to go a whole season without making national news for group rape at a team party. But if not, I’ll encourage them to do so. I have no problem if that and winning the ACC are goals 1 and 1(a).”

While I’m linking to CBS Sportsline.com, here’s another one: http://www.sportsline.com/cbssports/story/9558943. It’s the CBS Sports release announcing that Pat O’Brien is returning to the network to host the U.S. Open Late Night Show. Be sure to check out O’Brien’s quote on why he wanted to host the show: “Tennis is so f---ing hot. I’m so f---ing into it. I want to get a racket and some balls and do some drugs and just go crazy. I want to make tennis come.” Should be an interesting show.
