Florida Gators head football coach Will Muschamp stopped practice several times again today to show his offensive linemen that they were blocking each other and to urge them to try to not do that going forward.
“Guys! I love the effort, I really do!” Muschamp bellowed after blowing a drill dead. “But I need you to look at what you’re doing. Look up. Do you recognize the guy across from you? The guy you’re blocking? Yeah. You’re on the same unit.”
Muschamp then paused for a few seconds to let the error sink in to his players.
“Now who can tell me who you should be blocking?” the coach continued.
After a few moments, one player slowly raised his hand.
“Yes?” said the coach.
“Alabama?” said the player.
“No, son,” said Muschamp. “We don’t play them until late September. Any other guesses?”
No one raised a hand.
“Those guys are over there,” Muschamp said, pointing in the direction of Gators defensive players, several of whom were atop a Gators running back who was crushed on the play.
“Oh! Right!” said one lineman.
“I still don’t get it,” another said, quietly.
“Okay, men. Let’s huddle up and try again,” said the coach.
At the snap, the Gators line didn’t block anyone at all, causing the back to get hammered again.
“Okay, okay,” said Muschamp clapping. “At least you didn’t block yourselves that time. Progress.”
