“The breakout star of the Sochi Olympics has been Bob Costas’ eyes and only on NBC tonight will you get to see Bob Costas sit down with his oozing organs and ask the hard questions,” says the NBC promo.
“Olympics coverage is about human interest stories,” said NBC producer Gregg Tannebaum. “And nothing has gotten American talking in Sochi more than Bob Costas’ eyes and their heroic battle against infectious bacteria. And not journalist is better to talk to Bob Costas’ eyes than the great Bob Costas.”
NBC is also likely pushing the interview because Team USA’s subpar showing so far has left the network with few attractive alternatives. A sneak peek of the interview showed Costas’ eyes tearing up after repeated questions from Costas about how it felt to miss a major portion of the Olympics, the primary sports property associated with NBC.
“Do you feel you let Bob Costas down?” Costas asked. The eyes blinked repeatedly, and then large tears spilled out of them.
“Are you crying or are these tears just from irritation from the ongoing infection?” says Costas, following up as the interview preview ends.
Costas’ eyes will also appear tomorrow morning on NBC’s Today show and are said to be considering an appearance as a villain on the network’s The Blacklist.
