The receiver then continued: “Getting to play with A.J. Feeley in Miami was an honor and something I’ll never forget. Of course, I was spoiled by great quarterbacks with the Dolphins. There was A.J., of course. But also Gus Frerotte and Joey Harrington. I’d basically put them as 1, 1a and 1b on any quarterback rankings list. As would anyone.”
Welker was asked if he was being serious and he insisted that he was.
“You all have been asking me if Tom Brady or Peyton Manning is better,” he said. “This reporter he is the first quarterback to ask the question this way: ‘Who is the best quarterback you’ve ever played with?’ Tom and Peyton are good quarterbacks, but they’re no A.J. Feeley. They’re not even on the level of Gus Frerotte or Joey Harrington. I’m just being honest.”
Welker played with the Dolphins in 2004, 2005 and 2006 before joining Brady’s Patriots.
After stating again that Feeley, Frerotte and Harrington were the best quarterbacks he has ever played with, Welker was asked the question again by a Broncos team physician, who shined a light into the receiver’s eyes while he answered.
Welker was then rushed to New York City’s Mount Sinai Medical Center, where he has been placed into a coma so doctors can try to stem the swelling in his brain.
He has been downgraded to “questionable” for Sunday’s Super Bowl.
